4 Reasons Why You Should Start Therapy This Summer

I know the weather is nice, and you are spending time on patios, basking in the long days and enjoying friends and all the things that come with summer. Things are feeling pretty good right now, so why would you start therapy this season? Let’s discuss…

Reason #1: Longer Days and Warmer Weather

It’s actually a great time to start doing some deep emotional and healing work when you’re feeling more full and stable and have the capacity for more intense things. You’re in a natural space for having your “coping” and processing bucket full more now and can tackle some of those layers that can make life harder at other times of the year.

Summer, with its longer days and warmer weather, provides a unique opportunity for deep emotional and healing work. Let's explore this concept more in-depth:

  • Vitality and Energy: The transition from spring to summer often brings a sense of vitality and energy. The blooming nature, vibrant colors, and increased sunlight can have a profound impact on our mood and overall well-being. This surge in energy can serve as a catalyst for delving into our emotions and addressing underlying issues, themes, and patterns.

  • Stability and Connection: Many people experience a greater sense of stability and connection during the summer months. The longer days and warmer weather often encourage outdoor activities and social gatherings, fostering a sense of community and support. This stability can create a conducive environment for confronting deep-seated emotional issues with a greater sense of security.

  • Schedule Flexibility: Summer typically brings more flexibility in schedules, with school breaks, lighter workloads, and vacation time, think “Summer Fridays”. This extra time can be utilized for self-care, reflection, and engaging in therapeutic practices. Whether it's attending counseling sessions, participating in workshops, or simply taking time for solitude, the summer season offers ample opportunities for inner exploration.

  • Outdoor Activities: The abundance of outdoor activities during summer, such as beach walks, mountain hikes, or simply spending time in nature, can promote peace and introspection. Nature has a profound healing effect, and immersing oneself in natural surroundings can facilitate emotional healing and self-discovery. The beauty and serenity of the outdoors provide a conducive backdrop for introspective practices like meditation or journaling. In fact, did you know that science shows listening to birds singing in nature reduces our stress levels and calms the nervous system? Birds only sing when they are safe, and as a part of the ecosystem, we then feel safety when we hear birds sing.

  • Symbolism of Renewal: Symbolically, summer represents renewal and growth. Just as nature undergoes cycles of growth, transformation, and renewal during this season, individuals may feel inspired to shed old patterns and embrace new beginnings in their own lives. The energy of summer can encourage us to let go of past traumas or limiting beliefs and embark on a journey of personal growth and transformation.

In essence, the brightness, energy, and opportunities that summer brings create an ideal environment for deep emotional work, self-discovery, and transformation. By harnessing the natural elements and symbolism of the season, individuals can embark on a journey of healing and growth that aligns with the rhythms of nature.

Reason #2: Election Season

I know, I know. I wouldn’t mention this EVERY year, but if you have a pulse you know already know where I’m going with this. Election years have become increasingly emotionally charged in recent cycles. It's difficult to ignore the impact they have on individuals, as politics and social issues intertwine with personal beliefs and values. The line between the political and the personal often blurs, especially in today's interconnected world where news and information are constantly at our fingertips and we can see the ripple effect of policy on individuals with same AND different lived experiences than we have.

In therapy sessions, it's not uncommon for clients to bring up their feelings and concerns related to current world and national events. Issues such as social justice, equality, and political polarization can deeply affect individuals' mental health and well-being. Therapists recognize the importance of addressing these topics in sessions because they are not just abstract concepts but real-life experiences that shape how people perceive themselves and the world around them.

Acknowledging the emotional toll of the social climate and validating clients' experiences is crucial in therapy. It's not about taking a side or pushing a particular agenda but creating a safe space for individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment. Therapists often help clients navigate through these challenging times by offering coping strategies, perspective-taking exercises, and supportive interventions to promote resilience and emotional well-being.

So, while it's understandable to feel overwhelmed by the intensity of election seasons and the broader socio-political landscape, it's also an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. By addressing these issues in therapy, individuals can gain insight into their values, beliefs, and coping mechanisms, ultimately leading to greater emotional resilience and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Reason #3: Helps you prepare for Fall and Winter seasons

But fall/holidays/winter is when I have a hard time! - I know, and wouldn’t it be great to have a relationship established and prepared ahead of time for what is hard in the winter months rather than white-knuckling it, or avoiding it until you’re overwhelmed and panicked? These seasons can bring about increased stress, loneliness, or other difficult emotions for many people. By establishing a solid support system and self-care routine beforehand, you can better equip yourself to handle these challenges in a healthy and proactive manner.

Here are some steps to consider for preparing for the upcoming months:

  • Identify Potential Triggers:
Reflect on past experiences to recognize what aspects of fall and winter typically pose challenges for you. Is it the shorter days, holiday pressures, being cooped up inside, or feelings of isolation?

  • Develop Coping Strategies:
After pinpointing potential triggers, brainstorm coping mechanisms to help you navigate these obstacles. This may involve mindfulness practices, seeking support from loved ones, or engaging in activities that bring you happiness.

  • Build a Support Network:
Foster relationships with individuals who offer understanding and encouragement. A reliable support network can provide essential emotional backing during tough times. Don't hesitate to join support groups or seek professional assistance if necessary, your therapist can help you with this.

  • Create a Self-Care Plan:
Prioritize self-care activities that nurture your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This could include regular exercise, a balanced diet, ample rest, time spent outdoors, or engaging in hobbies that bring you joy.

  • Plan Ahead for Holidays:
Be proactive in preparing for the holiday season. Set achievable expectations, establish boundaries with loved ones, and explore alternative ways to celebrate if traditional gatherings are not feasible or enjoyable.

  • Seek Professional Help if Needed:
If in the past you’ve struggling with mood disruptions as the seasons change consider seeking assistance from a therapist or counselor sooner rather than later. They can offer tailored support, guidance, and coping strategies to meet your specific requirements.

By proactively readying yourself for the fall and winter months, you are empowered to navigate these seasons with increased resilience and well-being. Remember, it's absolutely acceptable to seek help when needed, and prioritizing your mental and emotional health is always worthwhile.

Reason #4: Avoiding Waitlists

You’re not the only one feeling the summer spark. As the summer season arrives, many of us find ourselves energized by the warmth of the sun and the promise of new beginnings. It's a time when routines loosen, and possibilities seem to expand. Interestingly, this shift isn't exclusive to individuals; therapists, too, often experience a seasonal surge in availability during this time.

For those who have been grappling with the daunting task of finding a therapist, this might be the golden opportunity you've been waiting for. While it's true that therapists, like many professionals, may take advantage of the summer months to indulge in some well-deserved "out of office" time, it's also a period when their caseloads tend to ebb and flow more fluidly.

If you've been eyeing a particular therapist but found their schedule consistently booked, now could be the perfect time to reach out and inquire about any newly available slots. The summer season often brings changes in clients' schedules, whether due to vacations, transitions, or simply a desire to prioritize self-care in the midst of sunny days.

It's important to recognize that finding the right therapist can be a challenging and sometimes disheartening journey. The waitlist, in particular, can feel like a barrier standing between you and the support you want. However, rather than viewing it as an insurmountable obstacle, consider reframing it as an opportunity for patience and persistence.

As you embark on this journey, remember to advocate for yourself and your mental well-being. Don't hesitate to express your needs and preferences to potential therapists, and be open to exploring different therapeutic approaches or modalities. While the waitlists could test your patience, it's worth remembering that the right therapist-client match can be transformative and empowering.

So, if you've been longing for the support of a therapist but have been deterred by waitlists, take heart in the summer season's potential for change and growth. Reach out, inquire, and embrace the opportunity to embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery. After all, the summer spark isn't just for sunbathing—it's also for igniting the flame of possibility within ourselves.
